Project Overview
In a fast-paced society, college students and busy workers become more anxious and stressed nowadays. With the existing meditation apps, do they really alleviate the problem and help the users with their mental health? In this project, we redesigned the Calm mobile app with a focus on the improvement of its visual UI design. We addressed the following 3 issues: accessibility, informational organization, and aesthetical feeling.
I. Research and Analysis

II. Defining
To better empathize with the user type, we made a persona to illustrate users' goals and needs. A redesigned architect was created to show how users would interact with the mobile app and what information would be shown on the screens.

Initial Wireframe
We created an initial wireframe, showing the general screen for the 4 main pages/tabs - home, sleep, meditate, and focus.
Features:
- A drop-down menu bar on the top left corner is available on every page that allows users to view content by different categories.
- A newly added profile button on the top right corner is available on every page that allows users to update their info and modify settings.
- Originally has 5 tabs at the bottom and now becomes 4; eliminates the "music" tab due to duplication with the dropdown option.
- Main content would be sorted by freemium subscription; free services on top and premiums appear as scrolling down.

Reflection
This was a casual, spontaneous & personal project for the 2 of us - the frequent users of the Calm app (free version). From a user standpoint, we both discovered there was a lot of space for improvement. On the other hand, Headspace app seems to be cleaner overall and more mature. With similar content (both are meditation apps), how can we make Calm more competitive and appealing? We focused on improving the UI design and followed the process of UX design. Even though I was working full-time for my job, I really enjoyed working on this project during weekends when I was free. It was rewarding to be able to practice & revisit User-Centered Design concepts and ideate possible solutions to address the problems. If we were to continue on this project, we would conduct usability/user testings for our redesigned screens.
